Last month, I told you a little about my evening with Condoleezza Rice ... this month I'd like to tell you a little bit about my December 5th evening at the historical Paramount Theatre in downtown Abilene with John and Dolores Compere, and the nonprofit organization Celebration Singers who have been entertaining peoplefor over seventeen years. I could tell you all about how the musicians and singers have to be invited to audition before the process of being considered to be a "part of this special group" even begins ... but I won't. |
I'd rather tell you how the amazing cast of the Celebration Singers is a down-to-earth collection of
passionate and talented folks from Abilene, Baird, Buffalo Gap, Clyde, Dyess AFB, Merkel, Noodle,
Rotan, Stamford, Tuscola, and Tye instead.
I could tell you about John Compere, and how he is a retired Brigadier General who loves my father's
newspaper (The Buffalo Gap Round-Up Newspaper) ... and how he even writes some awesome articles for Dad's newspaper every once in a while ... but, I won't.
I'd rather tell you how kind he was to me -even though he was so very busy-when I walked in to watch the show for the first time, and how he made sure I had the best seat in the house, and how he was so
enthusiastic and proud to be a part of something so special. Because, you see, Mr. Compere is on the
board of this non-profit organization, whose mission is to freely and generously entertain, and he is also a hard-working volunteer who works late hours to set up and break down the stage ... yes, I could tell you about all of those important details to help you see a bigger picture.
But I won't.
And I could tell you about how he proudly told me about his wife, Dolores, who is also on the board, and
how she is a powerful soprano for the group who has been battling laryngitis all week but she is such a
strong trooper ... and there she is on the third row, see? second from the left, see thatsmile of hers? Just
wait till later, she is going to get into her sexy Marilyn Monroe costume and seduce Santa with a solo ...
yes I could tell you about Mr. Compere's adoration for his beautiful wife, but I won't.
Instead, I'd rather tell you that I heard it all and saw it all for my own Self ... his love for her and his love
for the show, and her love for him and her love for the show ... along with her dynamic stage presence,
and her solid voice ... you can't fake that kind of devotion and love, and that's what I'd like to tell you
about.
I really truly enjoyed my evening with them, and I really hope the Comperes read this article and like it ...
because I could tell you that I really, really want to be invited to audition so I might maybe have a chance to someday be a Celebration Singer, too, and so maybe you might even get to see me on
stage with Dolores for their "Music in America" Spring 2015Concert ... yes, I could be bold enough to tell
you all that.
But I won't.
I am going to tell you to mark your calendar for "May 12th at the Paramount Theatre" instead.
